girlfriday: my best advice

(Perhaps it is not my best. If it were, it may not be worth listening to. But it is my best worldly advice.)

If you lack an air of confidence, fake it.

If you're scared to death, suppress it. Shake hands and smile, keep your back straight, pretend that your haircut is good and your toenails are painted.

If you don't know, choose: I will guess with flair, or I will keep silent. If you're wrong, you apologize with a laugh. If you're right, no one knows you guessed.

Do all of this with courtesy. And a smile. A great pair of shoes helps.

Self confidence is a lovely thing, a useful thing, though it is no great virtue. You don't have to be a confident person. But when when you need confidence (you will) and cannot summon it, pretend that you have. We promise not to know the difference.

I thought that was some of the best advice I've heard!
Very useful. And wise indeed. Only...
I don't have a great pair of shoes!
Dang!

Wow, Kate! How much self confidence I show is way down on my list of thoughts for the day.
On the top may be, "I wonder if anyone will notice the spit-up all over my shirt", or "I hope I get through the store without anyone arguing."

Maybe I SHOULD think more about that.

:) Anyway, don't care much. I am overflowing in blessings.

You would be one of the first I'd talk to if I had to give a big speech or something. You radiate with confidence and loveliness.

Like I said, it's no great virtue!

But sometimes it is very, very useful.

You stumbled upon my two secrets:

1) Wear great shoes
2) Pretend you're the fabulous person you wish you were or admire in others, even when you feel very far from it.

You wouldn't believe how often I "fake it." Sometimes, shrinking violets just aren't a pretty flower.

Genius, girlfriday. And not far off our old theory that confidence, a clipboard and a tag of some sort hanging from your neck can get you almost anywhere.
